Solar Street Lighting Installations in Zandspruit, Johannesburg

BEKA supplies 20 Solar Street Lighting units in Zandspruit, an informal township in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg.

In 2003, Johannesburg was the host of the first World Summit on Sustainable Development in Africa, the aim being the focus on promoting and maximising the use of sustainable energy, like solar energy.

The City of Johannesburg through its Utility, CITY POWER, has partnered with BEKA (Pty) Ltd, to realise the first of its kind Street Lighting Solar
Installation in the Johannesburg area of distribution to embrace this sustainable solar technology.

Zandspruit, an informal township in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, was identified as the recipient of this solar-powered lighting installation initiative.

The technology used comprises of the following:

  • Solar Panel of 85W
  • BEKARAY Post Top luminaire with one 11W Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL)
operated though an inverter, incorporated inside the luminaire
  • A Solar Box, which incorporates the battery and regulator in a theft-resistant
    housing
  • Seven meter mounting height steel pole

It is without doubt that this energy source will be beneficial to improving the
quality of life of communities, especially in areas where the conventional
form of energy is non-existent or its installation is geographically and
environmentally problematic.
