BEKA Products Illuminate the new R59 North / N12 East Directional Ramp in Alberton

BEKA has supplied an innovative lighting solution for the new ramp and tunnels connecting the R59 North and the N12 East in Alberton. The latest LED technology has been combined with DALI controlled fluorescent fittings, in order to provide effective lighting for the traffic traveling inside and between the tunnels.

A total of 608 BEKA INOXA luminaires were chosen to provide road lighting inside the tunnel because of its very highly efficient optical distribution. The exceptionally high light output, instant strike and re-strike, and dimming ability was the reason for the 2*54W ECG T5 lamps being chosen as the tunnel’s light source. These luminaires are installed in a continuous double row along the side walls of both the long and the short tunnel, in order to achieve the high lighting levels required to match the outside lighting levels in bright sunny conditions. A centralised Lighting Control and Management System, supplied by BEKA, has been implemented to control the tunnel luminaires in accordance with the external lighting levels, as well as to control the entry, exit and intermediary streetlighting.

The BEKA LEDbeam, a linear LED spotlight and wall washer, was also supplied for the decorative lighting of the tunnels. 308 BEKA LEDbeam 1200 NB/G 24V DC/48W luminaires are installed in a continuous row above the BEKA INOXA luminaires, along the side walls of the tunnels, providing a soft green washing effect on the soffit of the tunnel.

28 Special BEKA 150W MH streetlight luminaires are installed into the top part of the steel I-structure streetlight masts leading up to, and away, from the tunnel. These masts have also been installed on the interlinking road between the two tunnels.

Each mast is also equipped with a BEKA PRONTO LED uplighter luminaire. These uplighters are installed inside the I-structure at a height of one meter from the bottom and give a matching soft green glow to the top of the mast.

The illuminated tunnels have been constructed on the new Reading Ramp B, which replaces the previous loop ramp, as part of SANRAL’s Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project. This completely new ramp will reduce severe traffic in peak hours and eliminate the existing loop ramp that had a limited capacity and previously caused severe traffic blockages due to slow moving heavy vehicles manoeuvring around the sharp curves.

BEKA is proud to have provided the lighting solutions for this project and is proud of the association with the client, SANRAL, and the professional team involved, consisting of:
