BEKA Products Illuminate the Kimberley Skate Park

BEKA supplied the flood lighting for the newly built Kimberley Skate Park.

The BEKA STADIALUX XP 2kW floodlight, in various beam distributions, was the luminaire of choice for the floodlighting as it is a locally manufactured product with a robustly constructed, weather- and hail proof housing. A total of 88 BEKA STADIALUX XP floodlights were installed on six 25 meter masts around the skateboard circuit, providing floodlighting for the whole course. A feature of the luminaire that has been appreciated by the client is the impressive cut-off of the lighting outside the track, therefore complying to SANS 10389-3; the guide on the limitation of the effects of obtrusive light from outdoor lighting installations.

In order to effectively control the floodlighting, a BEKA Stadium Controller has also been installed, enabling the floodlighting to be switched between three different switching stages for difference situations: Practice, Provincial and TV. The circuit has been illuminated to 1500 lux vertically in order to enable TV cameras to film all the action.

The skate park, designed by Joe Ciaglia of California Skateparks and Pro Skater and Vans Team Rider Geoff Rowley, in collaboration with the Department of Public Works of the Northern Cape, pays tribute to Kimberley’s heritage by the incorporation of the famous Kimberley diamond into the course design.

The Kimberley Skate Park was opened for the Kimberley leg of the world-renowned Maloof Money Cup, which took place from the 30th of September to the 2nd of October 2011. The above-mentioned event is seen as the world’s biggest skateboarding event and world championship, showcasing the best amateur and professional skateboarders from around the world.

BEKA is proud to have provided the lighting solutions for this project and is proud of the association with the client, the Department of Public Works in Kimberley and the professional team involved, consisting of:
